MSG's Effects on the Body

In a recent television show which I was watching a man went to a Chinese restaurant and asked the waiter "Does your food contain MSG?" In turn the waiter asked "Do you want MSG?" The man said no and the waiter responded we never had MSG and will never have too.

This sort of got me to thinking. I can recall when I first heard of Monosodium glutamate (MSG). At the time, it was the latest and greatest thing. These days, everyone seems to be scrambling to avoid it.

I avoid it as well but I wondered just how many people avoid it for their health without actually knowing what it is and what ill side effects are associated with MSG.

A flavor enhancer created chemically is called MSG. The Japanese discovered it in 1900's and it's in use from that time.

It is used in many types of foods including soups, any ready-to-eat meal, processed foods like, canned meat, vegetables, fish and condiments. Basically, you'd have to look to avoid it.

The words may be "natural flavorings" or "hydrolyzed sodium." In some labels MSG is substituted with some other words.

But what is the problem with MSG? If it enhances the favor and the taste of my food with no side effects.

The problem is that for many, there are side effects of MSG and not all of them are minor. MSG is actually an excitotoxin. This means that its chemical makeup does actually "excite" the brain's neurons (brain cells) and can in some cases, cause them to die.

Side effects can include rashes, headaches and symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, wheezing and nasal discharge.

As this chemical additive affects the brain, it can for many, exacerbate an already existing neurological disorder such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's.

MSG is mostly related to dangerous and some times serious life threatening conditions. Some of them are asthma, brain cell death and tumors.

You should remember health is important than taste. Nature is always better than artificial. Therefore, to ensure good heath and brain activity I always avoid MSG and recommend others to do so.

Are you a person who has a problem with anger? One who when they learn something that shouldn't cause a blow-up, it does? Remember that just because you are taking one of these courses you are not showing that you are weak and can't handle things. Instead you are making the right choice to live a longer and better life. Plus those people around you will be pleased that you are happier too.

The biggest step though will be admitting that you need that help in the first place. Don't wait until it's too late and you've done something you can't take back. Whether it be simply losing a spouse because of your temper, or that road rage.

Often, anxiety builds up from the difficulty of maintaining interpersonal relationships and the lack of social skills, so therapy is needed. Treating schizophrenia also involves counseling family members on how to be a strong support team for the individual with the illness.
